The Deeside Doric Dirl

Thursday 8th October 2009

A brand new event for our 2009 special events season was the Deeside Doric Dirl.  The 'Dirl' was in response to the Doric Festival which is a 2 week long celebration of our unique north east culture and heritage.  For those unfamiliar with the north east of Scotland, Doric is the traditional language spoken in this area, and our history is filled with a vibrant culture of song, dance, music and story telling.

Our event was a concert featuring a wealth of talent from the local community.  Guest starring was Paul Anderson, internationally renowned fiddler from Tarland.  Children from our local Lumphanan primary school entertained our guests with recitals of well known doric poems-  well done to all the children especially the little primary 1's and 2's who did so well.   And the junior highland dancers from Banchory delighted with their performances of Barracks Johnnie and Flora MacDonald.

Thanks go to Alan Taylor who stepped in at the last minute to replace an unwell Geordie Muirison, and had us all rolling around with laughter at his doric songs.  And further hilarity erupted at Mrs Emslies poetry.

And last but not least, thanks also to the Tullynessle Scottish Country Dancers, Alistair Bruce who gave a fantastic rendition with our own Ken Howie of Geordie Wabster, and to Haldie Winton and Rob McCombie.

Tickets included a dish of our very traditional north east Stovies during the interval, and we raised well over £200 for the Lumphanan Parent Council from our raffle draw.

There were over 120 guests who attended and so far the feedback has been really positive,

Many thanks if you came along, and if you didn't, don't worry I think we'll hold another next year!
